RIVER

A barge constructed

of date palm,

heat

and worry

of time

on the Nile,

flat on her back

dreaming of crows,

shooting stars

and the Louvre,

Jane pens

a letter

to her father

at home

in his bed,

he is

dying.

She smiles

knowing

there at the end

he’s fulfilled

from his living,

how he rivered ongoing

meandering,

dancing

alone

and with friends

on beaches

of sand,

whirling round

spinning through life

like an American

Zorba,

yes, Jane knows

in her bones

he’s no longer

striving

as she basks

on the barge,

her dad is dying,

breathing the sky,

this pyramid

gleaming beyond,

how here

at the end,

he’s happy….

Tending What’s True

‘in longing you close your eyes, but in wonder you open them’. (Myra Shapiro)

Today somehow, don’t ask me

how (I won’t be able to answer)

for just a minute, trust me

that was long enough, my moist

weary eyes gazed with a feeling

I shall call awe

(yes with open eyes!)

into the cave underneath

these steep cliffs of stone,

this cave

carved from mountain, a sentinel

who’s stood through eons of storm,

sunshine and fog,

where I looked in wonder,

and saw

in this dark womb

of our longed~for belonging

your eyes glancing back

with the tenderest infinite longing..

Arriving

The orange flame

arrives

like clockwork

on the afternoon bus

from Zagreb. You

hoist your backpack

onto eager shoulders

and, singing in

Arabic, hit

the street,

hazel eyes

blazing, situated

exactly where

you like it, somewhere

liminal, halfway

between chaos

and calm,

forgetting

and remembering

at the same

time..

Backyard Haiku

Sprawling white cat..

You look like

     you ate

a watermelon!!

Dew Haiku

 Silver dew,

a single drop

clings

to desert

sage.

Humming Haiku

Hum of the frig

Massaging the tired house

Another cup of coffee..

Early days of summer,

my unquiet mind

     starts raking

Autumn’s fallen

      leaves..
