SKY'S GIFT

it’s early morning in late summer--
hundreds of orange
flowers have fallen,

lie scattered on the earthen
shore of my rectangled
backyard,

when a peripatetic hummingbird,
a tiny graceful busy-body
of the infinite
blue,

swooped and sashayed and
swooped some more towards

and away from me in waves
of blissed out delight

as I silently sit sipping
a first cup of morning

coffee gazing upon
this creature of pure
astonishment--

a speed freak seahorse
of the open sky

who greets
with quivering
eagerness

bleary-eyed surprised
beachcombers,

dawn’s amazed lucky
slowpoke denizens

of these
landlocked
suburbs

each and every
blessed dawn.
